After deaths: Ikea calls in US 36 million “Malm” -Kommoden back – THE WORLD

After the death of infants by toppling furniture Ikea calls in the US and Canada back 36 million dressers. This was announced by the Swedish group said Tuesday. Because the US Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC blames fallen Ikea furniture for the deaths of at least six children under three years. The dressers were not sure if they were not attached to the wall, the Authority said. Even Ikea urged his customers urgently to dübeln the furniture.

Some of the deaths are, however, according to the authority a long time ago. One child died already 27 years ago, the other cases are from the years 2002 to 2016. The CPSC knows by its own account in addition of 36 cases in which children were injured.

the recall only applies to customers in the US and Canada. Affected are several models of dressers or shelves with drawers. According to Ikea it comes to children’s furniture with a height of more than 60 centimeters, and more than 75 centimeters high furnishings for adults. All models have been sold for years at Ikea in North America.

Ikea stressed this furniture should be attached to the wall to prevent it from falling. Anyone have any such piece of furniture and it had not yet screwed, it should clear out of the reach of children. Ikea offered free sets on to anchor the furniture. Customers can obtain a refund but also the price. This applies to homes that have been purchased since of 2002. Older furniture be withdrawn at half the price.

The Ikea boss in the US, Lars Petersson, declared that the models have an indication in the instructions that one must screw them to the wall. In the past year, the Group had free kits for fixing his chest model Malm distributed after there had been reports of deaths in children.

The Consumer Authority stressed also other manufacturers were prosecuted if there is a risk that their furniture fall over. “I appeal to the furniture industry to bring rapid reliable models on the market,” said CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye.
