Lufthansa threatens reduction of about 2,000 jobs in Hamburg – SPIEGEL ONLINE

The group management of Lufthansa Technik threatening workers with the loss of over 2,000 jobs in Hamburg. It affects approximately 400 jobs in overhaul and 1700 in the maintenance of aero engines. (This message comes from the SPIEGEL. The new SPIEGEL, click here.)

In order to prevent the clear-cutting, works council and trade unions should agree to drastic austerity measures until the end of March.

The company wants to cut wages, among other things, emphasize the Christmas bonus and also set up on Sundays a round-the-clock operation for which an application has been made in the city of Hamburg already.

600 points in the engine maintenance wants Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr deleted even if the employee representatives agree to the rationalization measures.

The workers who set up private luxury jets, could soon also be affected, because the order books are empty. Several years ago, the company has begun to shift maintenance in countries with low wages. The engine maintenance could move into the Polish Katowice.

A Lufthansa spokesman confirmed the restructuring plans, they are necessary in order “to survive in international competition”.
