Christine Lagarde remains head of the IMF – t-online.de

WASHINGTON (AFX) – The French Christine Lagarde will lead the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the future. The Fund has on Friday confirmed the second term its Executive Director.

Christine Lagarde stands since July 2011. at the head of the powerful organization to which 188 Member States and especially for financial support nonperforming States uses. The former French finance minister was only candidate, the IMF Executive Board made the decision unanimously.

In the years 2000 to 2004, the later German President Horst Koehler had led the organization in Washington. Traditionally, it is led by a European or a European, while the sister organization the World Bank is under American management.

“With this decision the board has the strong and wise leadership of Ms. Lagarde acknowledged in their first term,” said the head of the committee, Alexei Mozin. In turbulent times Lagarde has strengthened the IMF’s membership. Lagarde had warned recently especially before a premature tightening of interest rate policy in the US. This could bring emerging and developing countries in difficulties.

Christine Lagarde has become as IMF director to one of the key figures in the euro crisis. Because the fund has also made some Member States as a condition for aid loans strict conditions, their person applies in some countries as a red flag. Recently there had been in rebellion against Greece Lagarde because the IMF has there made pension reform a condition for financial assistance. Many Greeks fear to be cheated their contributions paid.

Lagarde himself was on Friday delighted with the confirmation in office. “I look forward to continue to serve the members and in the period ahead our important mission to carry on,” she said. The French had their candidacy and the support of the federal government.
